Kappa Zeta Chapter Founding PDF Print E-mail

In 1967 Georgia Southern College decided to allow social fraternities and sororities on campus. Up until that time only professional and a couple of local service fraternities were in existence. In order to be allowed to be recognized and affiliate with a national fraternity, you had to form a local fraternity. There were a couple of good friends that met and decided to pursue this. The school set an arbitrary limit of 12 groups. The groups were to petition the school and then affiliate with the national fraternity of their choice. Before the school could stop the petitions 14 groups had applied.

In 2010-2011 Kappa Sigma is actively following the example set by our founding brothers.  Kappa Sigma is the largest fraternity at Georgian Southern with over 100 brothers. The fraternity has been named IFC Fraternity of the Year. We also received the Greek Alumni Relations Award, Greek Philanthropy Award, Greek Campus Involvement Award, named Greek Intramural Champions for the 4th consecutive year, and Best “Greek Street Trick-or-Treat” chapter house for the 3rd consecutive year. Chapter President Jamie Lawrence was named Greek Man of the Year. Kappa Sigma brothers serve as President of the Inter-fraternity Council, and Vice President of Student Government. We have eight brothers serving as student senators, executive board members of Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, and the Accounting Honors Society. Academically Kappa Sigma ranks number one for its GPA among the 15 fraternities on campus. Nationally Kappa Sigma at GSU has been recognized by the International Fraternity for rush program, service to the community, and has been named one of “Jackson’s Chapters” for its financial contributions to the Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation.

After almost 40 years at Georgia Southern University, Kappa Sigma has become the largest fraternity and one of the best fraternities the campus has to offer. The Kappa-Zeta chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity was voted Best Fraternity on Campus in 2006.

Kappa Sigma’s alumni remain active as well. The “Kappa Zeta Alumni Association” has established its own scholarship fund, the “Kappa Sigma Memorial Scholarship”, which awards cash scholarships to deserving undergraduate brothers. We are the only Greek organization at GSU to offer such a program. Kappa Sigma alumni serve on the GSU Foundation Board, C.O.B.A. (College Of Business Administration) Board, and the GSU Alumni Advisory Board.

Active ImageKappa Sigma is an international fraternity with currently over 300 chapters and colonies in North America. Kappa Sigma was originally founded in Bologna, Italy in 1400 and was established in America in 1869 at the University of Virginia.

Kappa Sigma was founded in America on December 10, 1869 by five students (William Grigsby McCormick, George Miles Arnold, John Covert Boyd, Edmund Law Rogers, and Frank Courtney Nicodemus) attending the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. The five founders, called "The Five Friends and Brothers," gathered in McCormick's room at 46 East Lawn and laid the foundations for the fraternity. From this first meeting, Kappa Sigma was given a Constitution and an Oath from which are taken the principles and ideals of all Kappa Sigma's. Kappa Sigma was the first "Southern" fraternity to establish a chapter in the North, at Lake Forest College, Illinois.

Kappa Sigma's ideals are centered around four pillars:
Leadership, Fellowship, Scholarship, and Service.

Kappa Sigmas are taught to live their lives by the Star and Crescent, which are the symbols of the Fraternity that make up the official badge.

"The Star and Crescent shall not be worn by
every man, but only by him who is worthy to wear
it. He must be a gentleman...a man of honor and
courage...a man of zeal, yet humble...an
intelligent man...a man of truth... one who
tempers action with wisdom and, above all else,
one who walks in the light of God."
