beach trip 74 2

Kappa Zeta 1968-1979 Alumni “Survivors Beach Trip”If you were a Kappa Sig at GSC during the 60’s and 70’s the social highlight of the year was the annualspring beach trip in May. Each year the boys would wind their way down the “Woodpecker Trail” through South Georgia, pick up I-95 at Brunswick, heading for Daytona Beach. Our destination, the Safari Inn, a 50’s era mid-rise that featured “Conditioned Air & a TV in every room”. So what if the AC screeched like a VW Beetle, and the TV was black & white with 3 fuzzy channels, we thought we were in heaven. To think about it we were! With our gorgeous GSC coeds, Kappa Sig Stardusters, and an unlimited amount of kegs what else did a Kappa Snapper need? Who can forget the Shark Attack Lounge just down the street, a casual Gentlemen’s Club where bikers mixed with frat boys. Where some folded their dollar bills the long way for the first time. And there was always the popular Alligator Farm on highway 301, when in ‘74 Kevin Connell was ambushed by Sam the crazed chimp. Late in the afternoon Cole’s Commandoes stormed the beach, and then we’d gather for the big group portrait. Many a heart was won and broken by late Saturday night as the band played everything from Sam & Dave to ZZ Top. A Gator contest provided the entertainment, as the Tee-Kee Hut floated in the pool. Was management happy? Maybe not, but Sunday afternoon, they’d always say “See you boys next year”.Several months ago, one Friday afternoon, a few old timers were nursing a cold one at Boz Bostock’s “Gnats Landing”, on Saint Simons Island. As usual the conversation turned to the old days. The days of a full head of hair, flag football, Free Dog Night at the K.O.G., the Flame and of course BEACH TRIP. Suddenly these captains of industry realized, we live at a beach! We still enjoy a cold one or two! AND we have about 279 Kappa Sig brothers around our age, (most with good credit), that…..LOVE THE BEACH & a COLD ONE! At once they shouted those famous words, “BEACH TRIP!”We are happy to announce that Kappa Sigmas initiated between 1968 &1979 are invited to Kappa Zeta’s “60’s & 70’s Survivors Beach Trip”. Brothers,

On January 25th, I visited our Headquarters in Charlottesville, VA for the Kappa Sigma Fellows Program training. Brothers, the sight was absolutely surreal. The new Headquarters now sits on the side of a mountain. Directly across the valley sits historic Monticello where Thomas Jefferson once lived. The architecture of the building is state of the art, and the collection in the museum would take your breath away.

During my visit, I stumbled into the archives room. I quickly found Kappa Zeta’s archive and was delighted at the amount of information I found. After two hours of reading, I was just half way done. I found letters from 1967 when Kappa Sigma made initial contact with Georgia Southern. I found a letter from Brother M.H. Allen to the past Worthy Grand Master. I even had the chance to read the 1983 Gator Gazette. It was an absolute pleasure to read about such a strong foundation that alumni like you have built for our current brothers.

It made me truly proud to see all the things our chapter has accomplished over the years. As you will see in this newsletter, the chapter has many exciting events planned and much to be proud of. I wish you the best. Please come back to the ’Boro when you can. We will be here and we look forward to seeing you.

AEKDB,

Beau Turpin
Grand Master
